ASICS split the Metaspeed line for a reason worth understanding. The Sky is built for stride runners, those who go faster by lengthening the stride, and puts more foam under the forefoot to support that. The Edge is built for cadence runners who go faster by turning the legs over quicker, with a more aggressive plate angle to help each stride come round sooner.

Both use FF Turbo Plus foam and a full length carbon plate at legal stack, and both sit among the lightest marathon capable shoes on the market. The MD and LD versions carry the same thinking onto the track for middle and long distance events.

If you do not know which type of runner you are, the practical test is what happens when you accelerate. If your stride gets longer, take the Sky. If your feet start moving faster, take the Edge.

Looking for something specific?

What is the difference between the Metaspeed Sky and Edge?

The Sky suits stride runners and places more foam under the forefoot for a longer, more floating stride. The Edge suits cadence runners with a plate geometry that helps each stride come round faster. Same foam, different geometry.

Is the Metaspeed good for a marathon?

Yes. Both the Sky and Edge are built for the full distance and sit among the lightest options at legal stack height. The MD and LD models are the track versions and are not intended for road marathons.

Does the Metaspeed fit true to size?

Take your usual ASICS running size. The upper is thin and race fitted through the midfoot, and the toe box is narrow, so wide feet usually go half a size up.

How do I know if I am a stride or cadence runner?

Watch what changes when you speed up. If your stride length grows, you are a stride runner and the Sky suits you. If your leg turnover increases while stride length stays similar, take the Edge.
